Photography

Abi does experimental photography in black and white on vintage cameras. He describes his process:

"I take a 120mm camera (medium format camera) such as the Holga and use a 35mm film instead of the 120mm. This way, lots of textures and patterns are acquired, and also vintage cameras give a unique lighting to each frame that are impossible to duplicate! I use Holga 120N, Olympus OM-2 (35mm) and Nikon D60 (Digital SLR) for my photography and multiple lighting set-ups, a 3 set JTL studio strobe lighting system and sometimes I even use heat lamps... Photography doesn't require expensive gear; rather it can be achieved through creativity."

In the Summer of 2010, Abi returned home to Ethiopia. He returned with photographs of family, friends, and others. The first exhibition in Gallery 221 was of the photos he took in Ethiopia as well as in the southwestern United States. Several of the photos from Ethiopia are displayed below (Note: some of the photos have been cropped).

Other Work

Many of his other photographs can be found in his online portfolio. Abi's ceramic works can be seen at his exhibitions on display in Gallery 221 during First Friday events.
