Vieques lies about 7 miles off the east of Puerto Rico. The island is about 20 miles long. The US Navy has expropriated about 2/3 of the island and relocated all civilians to the center of the island. The civilian population has remained about 10,000 as it was since long before the Navy came. The "US Navy" lands on the west have recently been turned over in various pieces to the Department of Interior and to civilian control. |
