Wristcutters: A Love Story
When Zia (Patrick Fugit) kills himself, he goes to an afterlife limbo set aside for people who died by suicide. It's exactly like the real world, only everything is slightly worse: there are no flowers or stars, the colors are dim and no one can smile. Zia starts meeting people and making friends, such as a Russian rocker Eugene (Shea Wigham) who electrocuted himself onstage with his guitar. Eventually he learns that his ex-girlfriend has also committed suicide and, with Eugene, sets out to find her. Along the way they meet Mikal (Shannon Sossamon), who says that there's been a mistake and she doesn't belong there, and Kneller (Tom Waits), who is the leader of a small community. I like this movie because even though it has a tragic premise, and it does have a very dark core, it also has an uplifting and life-affirming message that stays with the viewer. Also the idea of an afterlife set aside for suicide is interesting, since it is similar to what suicide really does - they think that they're ending their misery but it's only just beginning. |
