The Brother from Another Planet
"The Brother" (Joe Morton) is an escaped alien slave who looks like a human black man, except that he is mute and has three large toes on each of his feet. He crash lands in the New York Harbor and finds his way to Harlem, where he meets people and makes friends. He's being chased by two other aliens (David Strathairn and John Sayles) who resemble white men, and want to recapture "The Brother".
This movie is an interesting looks at race and racial relations. When "The Brother" sees humans' interactions between blacks and whites he gets puzzled because even though black people and white people exist on his planet, he's never seen that kind of racism before. The two men in black never refer to "The Brother" by his skin color, and they call him "three toe" when describing him, so that's how they prejudice people. The point that the movie makes is that the color of people's skin is as arbitrary as the number of their toes. |
